Small moments of movement can matter.
Exercise is important. But researchers are also finding value in something much smaller: interrupting long periods of sitting with short bursts of movement throughout the day.
Across randomized trials and systematic reviews, brief activity breaks have been associated with improvements in blood flow, glucose and insulin response, some types of physical discomfort, and certain aspects of cognitive function.
That research is closely aligned with the idea behind WaitFit: use the small openings already built into your day to move more often.
Breaking up sitting gets the body moving again.
Sitting for long periods means the large muscles in the legs are doing very little. Researchers have been studying what happens when those sedentary periods are interrupted with short bouts of activity.
A 2026 meta-analysis combined 36 randomized trials involving 632 adults. Compared with uninterrupted sitting, activity breaks improved peripheral blood flow and flow-mediated dilation, a measure of how well blood vessels respond to increased blood flow. Researchers also found a small reduction in systolic blood pressure. Read the research .
The studies used different movements and break schedules, so there isn't one proven formula. But short bouts of activity were enough to produce measurable changes.
Marching, stepping, heel raises and other easy movements activate muscles that have been relatively still. That's the idea behind WaitFit's Circulation breaks.
Short activity breaks can change how the body responds to prolonged sitting.
One of the more consistent areas of research looks at glucose and insulin after meals.
A 2026 systematic review identified 53 studies examining activity breaks during prolonged sitting, with 39 included in the meta-analysis. Compared with continuous sitting, regularly interrupting sitting with activity lowered post-meal glucose and insulin responses. Walking breaks produced particularly consistent results. A study that looks a lot like a WaitFit break
In another 2026 study, researchers worked with 86 sedentary office workers ages 25–55.
For 12 weeks, one group completed a 3-minute movement break every hour during the workday. Each break included six simple 30-second movements:
No equipment or large exercise space was required.
After 12 weeks, the movement-break group showed improvements in fasting glucose, post-meal glucose and insulin resistance compared with the control group. Researchers also reported improvements in waist circumference, systolic blood pressure and HDL cholesterol, along with higher self-reported energy. Read the study .
The intervention wasn't a workout session. It was simple movement distributed across the workday. The study doesn't prove that WaitFit produces the same health outcomes, but it shows why small, repeated opportunities to move are worth paying attention to.
Movement can also help with some of the discomfort of desk work.
Not every movement break needs to get your heart rate up. Some are simply about changing position and using parts of the body that may have been relatively still.
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 19 randomized controlled trials involving 2,732 sedentary workers. Workplace micro-exercise programs were associated with reductions in neck and shoulder pain and improvements in neck-related function. Read the review .
The programs varied considerably. Some emphasized mobility, some strengthening, and some combined the two. That means the research doesn't point to one perfect desk exercise routine.
Moving the shoulders and upper back, opening the chest, rotating the torso, moving the hips and activating muscles that haven't been doing much can all help break up a static workday. That's the thinking behind WaitFit's Posture and Strength breaks.
A movement break may give your brain a change of pace, too.
The research on cognition is newer and less conclusive, but there are some interesting signals.
A 2026 meta-analysis reviewed 21 randomized crossover trials involving 433 participants. Researchers found small short-term improvements in executive function and memory when prolonged sitting was interrupted with standing or physical activity.
They did not find clear improvements in attention, information processing or overall cognition, and the certainty of the evidence was low for most outcomes. Read the review .
We wouldn't claim that a movement break automatically makes someone more productive. The evidence suggests something more modest: getting up and moving may provide a useful physical and mental change of state during a long stretch of sedentary work.
Different moments call for different kinds of movement.
There isn't one movement that does everything. WaitFit rotates among several types of short breaks so you aren't asking your body to do the same thing every time.
Movement breaks are useful. They aren't a replacement for exercise.
The research gives us good reason to move more often and avoid accumulating long periods of completely uninterrupted sitting.
It doesn't tell us that there is one perfect movement, break length or number of breaks per day. And short movement breaks aren't a substitute for regular aerobic activity, strength training, medical care or other healthy habits.
WaitFit has not been clinically tested as a health intervention. We use current research to inform the kinds of movement opportunities WaitFit offers rather than claiming that using WaitFit will reproduce the results of any individual study.
The idea is simpler: when you have a moment to move, move. Over the course of a day, those moments can add up.
